“Dawn Hoag, sales and marketing manager for BioLok, says research shows that implant dentistry today has a 95 to 98 percent success rate, compared to some more traditional dental treatments such as endodontics, which has approximately a 72 percent success rate.

“Today we can go from extracting a tooth top replacing it with an implant on the same day, which maintains soft and hard tissue and helps prevent massive bone loss, which means the patient, maintains facial integrity” says Hoag

She says the company is focusing on its laser surface technology, which allows soft tissue attachment and bone attachment.

“Nowadays, we really need aesthetics in dentistry.  Patients are paying anywhere from $5,000 to $45,000 for implant treatment, so they want something that’s going to be aesthetic,” she says. “If, after 5 or 10 years, they loose gum tissue and their metal margins are exposed, patients aren’t going to be happy after spending that sort of money.

“We have a product, Laser Lok, which is patented worldwide, that will prevent that from happening.  Most implant systems lose bone, mostly down to the first thread due to bone compressional forces and the laser surface technology helps prevent that bone loss.  The technology helps prevent that bone loss.  The threads of the implant are actually wider in the midpoint of the implant, so that’s where you get your compressional forces”

BioLok also offers a tome-release material which helps prevent bone loss after tooth extraction

In terms of growth in implants, Hoag says that dentists have often recommended more traditional treatment options, with implants seeming a last resort.

“A lot of dentists aren’t aware of the benefits and feel traditional methods work for them.  But I think that mind-set will change over time because implant dentistry is here to stay” . . .
